UPDATE: Arrests of Persons with Outstanding Warrants following Illinois Temporary Visa Driver’s License (TVDL) Application

September 09, 2014

Recent reports of an individual being arrested following an application for an Illinois Temporary Visa Driver’s License have appeared in the media. The Chicago Tribune reports that an individual was recently arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at a meeting at the Secretary of State’s office in February after applying for a TVDL.

While this piece of news likely sounds very frightening to potential TVDL applicants, there is no reason to panic. It should be noted that this particular applicant had previously been ordered deported and had a warrant for his deportation in the database.  This was spotted by Illinois Secretary of State’s office, which alerted ICE.

Main takeaway:  Applicants who believe they may have previously been ordered deported, or who believe there may be a warrant for their arrest, should consult with a qualified attorney before applying for a TVDL license. If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, please feel free to contact the attorneys at Minsky, McCormick and Hallagan P.C.
