Nothing is more important than family. Unfortunately, many people have to leave their families behind when coming to this country in order to realize their dreams. Once they have established legal residence, bringing their family back together becomes a top priority, but the process isn’t easy.
Our Chicago immigration attorneys have been helping families come to this country since 1975. We have decades of experience with immigration law and can give you the help you need. If you’d like to discuss your options, call Minsky, McCormick & Hallagan, P.C. or contact us online to schedule a consultation and learn how we can help your family.
If you are a United States citizen, certain members of your family are entitled to immigrate to the U.S. under our immigration laws. While this doesn’t include all of your relatives, it does include immediate members of your family:
Under U.S. immigration law, you are allowed an unlimited number of visas for members of your immediate family. Other relatives may be able to immigrate as well, but they are subject to a limited number of visas according to the category they qualify for and the country they are immigrating from. For those relatives, they are given priority based on “immediate relative categories” established by law:
Note that the spouses and children of permanent residents are given priority over married children and brothers and citizens of U.S. citizens. If there aren’t enough visas, you may have to wait several years before they can immigrate legally.
The immigration process isn’t easy. You have to understand which categories your family members belong to, and which forms will need to be completed. You will need to compile the appropriate documentation to support the application, which can be difficult to obtain. Failing to complete the forms correctly or submit the correct documentation can result in delays and even in denial of your application.
Our immigration attorneys have the knowledge and experience to help you get through the process as quickly and as painlessly as possible. We know that this is your family, not just an administrative transaction. We work with you every step of the way to ensure you know exactly what is happening with your application so that you can be with your loved ones.
Your family is important and deserves skilled, experienced legal representation. We’ve worked with thousands of families in the Chicago area, and we can help you with any immigration issue your facing.
